So I’ve come to realize a pattern here… pretty much all of my favorite cities are basically foodie towns; places centered around a vibrant culture; places that aren’t just vanilla. That’s why I love making the 25-minute ride to our neighboring town of Durham. Its energy, and also the life and buzz that surrounds all the revitalization that you can feel as various artistic projects are springing up all around.
So what are some of my favorites, you might like to know?
Mateo – They had me at “Spanish small plates with a Southern inflection.” Almost impossible to narrow down my favorites here, and while the food makes my tummy very happy, the energy and mood feeds my soul. This is a perfect date night addition when going to catch a show at the DPAC!
Pour Taproom – This hip little joint has 64 self-serve taps with various craft beer, cider and wine and a really great chillaxed vibe. Come hang out, play your favorite vintage boardgames and sample around, pouring yourself whatever floats your boat.
M Sushi – Truly, I’ve decided this place needs to make my last supper. I am obsessed with everything and am never disappointed with the elevation of their plates. You just need to go.
Jujus – This place never disappoints! My favorite was the crab and shrimp cake that sat atop a beautiful green curry… yumm!
JackTar – I went for lunch and had the most delicious fried oyster Bahn Mi sandwich. Make sure you do not skip the jalapeño cabbage slaw… seriously amazing. I also heard these pancakes here are the absolute best in the Triangle!
Unscripted Durham – This completely redone hotel channels the coolest vintage California vibes. I love all the character and soul that was poured into the design of this place… every detail has been perfectly crafted to create a certain story. It’s in a fantastic location and has something going on almost on a daily basis… be it sketching classes, poolside workouts, live music, trivia night, drag brunches, and the most casual-cool lobby area like straight outta the West Elm catalog.
American Tobacco Campus – This area, which is adjacent to the Durham Bulls ballpark, has all the quintessential charm for any of you picnic goers. I just love sitting out there along the water and soaking in all the R & R. There are also plenty of restaurant options here, too… more American fare and sports bar/breweries, but definitely enough options to satisfy everybody!
21C hotel – This place is modern, clean and artsy. I mean, after all, it has an art museum inside of it. I’ve never eaten in the main dining room at its restaurant, The Counting House, but I’ve enjoyed a wonderful pre-show drink and bite at the bar, and have also stayed here for a family wedding. Everything was wonderful, and this hotel has a high end feel and a great location as well.
